FEI EIER European Open Championship, individual podium, Sheik Majid Al
Maktoum (bronze), Sheik Hamdan Al Maktoum (gold), Kristel Van Den Abeele

A hundred and ten horses representing 27 nations started on the 160 km
course of the FEI Open European Endurance Championship in Compiègne (FRA).
Sixty horses completed the championship and passed the final veterinary
inspection.

The United Arab Emirates and its team led by Sheik Mohammed Al Maktoum and
his three sons earned the most medals: the Individual gold and bronze medals
and the Team gold of the Open championship. Belgium missed the double Team
Gold only because Leonard Liessens’s horse was eliminated after the finish
line for lameness. Belgium however won both the Individual and Team Gold of
the European classification.

raté la médaillepar équipe du classement OPEN seulement à cause de
l'élimination au trotting final du cheval de Léonard Liesens. Néanmoins la
Belgique remporte l'or en individuel et en équipe au niveau européen.
The Championship started at 6 o’clock on Friday 26 August, and with 160 km
run in 9:11:00 and an average speed of 17,47 km/h, the young Sheik Hamdan Al
Maktoum (UAE), son of Sheik Mohammed, was the first to cross the finish line
after an incredible final race against Belgian Kristel Van Den Abeele and
Chanice du Tilleul, to win the Open Championship by the narrowest margin (1
second). A bit less than a minute later, Sheik Majid bin Mohammed and Orcara
crossed the line to earn the individual bronze.
Le championnat a débuté à 6H et s'est gagné à une moyenne de 17,47
KM/H. Sh Hamdam a été le premier à franchir la ligne au terme d'un sprint
incroyable contre la belge Kristel VandenAbeel et Chganice du Tilleul. Une
minute plus tard Sh Majid franchissait la ligne pour prendre la médaille de
bronze.
La jument vainqueur is Georgat qui avait fini à la 2me place au Ch du Monde
sous la selle de Barbara Lissarague.
The winning grey mare ridden by Sheik Hamdan is the renowned Georgat, who
finished second at the 2004 World Championship under the saddle of Barbara
Lissarague (FRA).
With a total of 28:35:08, the United Arab Emirates won the Team title of the
Open classification, ahead of Belgium (Silver) and France (Bronze).

The FEI European Championship classification, reserved for the 19 European
participating nations, saw the victory of the Belgian Team with a total of
28:59:06 ahead of France (29:10:16) and Switzerland (31:43:49). Kristel Van
Den Abeele (BEL), 35, won the Individual Gold, ahead of the two French
riders Elodie Le Labourier on Sangho’Limousian and Géraldine Brault on
Galagolan Dudesert. The 11-year old Arab mare Galagolan also earned the Best
Condition Award.
Le championnat européen réservé aux nations européennes (19 nations) a
vu la victoire de l'équipe de Belgique devant la France et la Suisse.
Kristel Van den Abbel remporte le titre européen devant les françaises
Elodie Le Labourier et Géraldine Brault.
Ian Williams, Head of the FEI Endurance Department said: “We knew by giving
the organisation to the 2000 World Championship team that we would have a
great event. Compiègne is a magnificent site and the Organising team has a
lot of experience. Thanks to the “open” status of the championship, no less
than 27 nations entered the competition. This is a record for a European
Championship.”
